It’s as if you’re being taken along by a mighty river that’s incredibly powerful and simply takes you wherever it takes you. You believe that you can get somewhere though and so you’re swimming and swimming, struggling and struggling, trying everything possible to get where you think you should be. All the while the river simply takes you wherever it takes you. Then suddenly you realise that all this swimming is hopeless. You realise that you’ll never be able to get where you think you should be. You realise that the river simply does whatever it does and takes you wherever it takes you. It feels hopeless for a while. You’re stuck in it. You can’t get out of it. Your head is under water half the time and you’re coughing and choking. You’re suffering and you can’t get out of it. Now it feels really hopeless. But then you realise that you can’t get out of it, but it’s always changing. Your head’s not under water all of the time. Sometimes it’s quite pleasant and relaxing, just floating along. The scenery is always changing. Sometimes you float along through a harsh barren wasteland, but sometimes through beautiful countryside. And it’s always changing. It’s comfort and discomfort. It’s pleasure and pain. It’s good and bad. You can’t get out of it, but it never stays the same. And then you realise that the river is carrying you along, that the river has always been doing everything. And then maybe you can relax and let it simply take you wherever it takes you.

The river is all there is.
